1. Can anyone access OhioLINK database resources?
Databases are licensed and paid for under contractual agreements. Due to contract restrictions the general public is not allowed remote access to databases. Any state of Ohio employee with a current library card from the State Library of Ohio can access OhioLINK databases.
2. How do I access database resources?
There are two methods used when accessing databases and related services: Automatic⁄Direct and Remote Access. What determines which method you use is based on the following criteria:
- Your physical location: Where you are when using OhioLINK databases.
- IP address recognition: Whether the IP address of the computer you are using is a recognized address.
Access is determined by IP (internet protocol) address. This method of access is only available to you from the agency where you work. In order for this method to work the IP address of the computer you are using must be recognized as a valid IP address of a State of Ohio agency. This requires that the address be submitted to OhioLINK. If you are using a computer at the State Library or any state agency that has been set up for direct access, you will automatically be able access the databases that the State Library subscribes to.
Access Problems: If you are at a state agency and are unable to access these database directly but would like to have direct access, please contact Research Services at 614-644-7051. Until your agency's access status is resolved, you will need to access the databases using the Remote Access method described next.
From your home or agency without automatic access to OhioLINK resources, you can use the "remote authentication," method or, "password access", to search databases. When you attempt to access restricted resources, a login page will appear. You will need to complete the following steps for access:
- 1. Select the State Library as your institution on the drop-down menu
- 2. Provide your last name, first name (in that order, exactly as it appears on your State Library card)
- 3. Enter the last nine digits of your State Library patron ID number.

3. What are the requirements for access?
- Patron Card
- You must have a current library card from the State Library of Ohio. For Remote Access you will be asked to enter your patron id number that is issued to you when you register for your library card. If you do not have a current library card and would like to register online you can do so by going to this page.
- Browser Requirements
Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), versions 5.x and 6.x., Netscape 7.x (or later), Mozilla, and Opera 7.x (or later) all work well with OhioLINK services and remote authentication.
Also check to see if your browser accepts cookies. OhioLINK places a cookie temporarily on your browser. This cookie contains the information necessary for you to gain access to the databases. Without it you will not be able to access any OhioLINK databases even though you have successfully authenticated.
- Firewall Requirements
- If you are coming from a work location or have installed a personal firewall at home, please be aware that unless certain ports are opened on the firewall, it will block you from accessing OhioLINK databases. The required ports are listed here. You will need to pass on this information the department administering network security at your location. If you are still having problems, contact the State Library’s Research Services department at 614-644-7051 for help.
- IP address - for Automatic Authentication
- For automatic⁄direct access to OhioLINK database from your work place a public route able IP address which is a valid state of Ohio IP address must be entered into the OhioLINK authentication system. Due to security policies this process requires coordination between network⁄security personnel of your agency and the State Library to set up. Please contact the State Library’s Research Services department at 614-644-7051 to begin the process.
